Ten years and 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner (252 million dollars) in production, Halden stretches over 75 acres (30 hectares) of gently inclined forest in the South-East of Norway. The installation has facilities such as a sound studio, jogging trails and a chalet with two bedrooms where prisoners can be housed their family members during nocturnal visits. The air is not unlike many of the American prisons impregnated scent of sweat and urine. Instead, the smell of orange sorbet “kitchen laboratory” where the prisoners come from cooking courses. “In the Norwegian prison system, there is an approach to human rights and respect,” says his Hoidal, Governor of the prison. “We do not see any of this as unusual.”
